Scaling and other preventive services- Western Special Needs Dentistry provides scaling and other preventive services including oral hygiene and diet advice. Personalised assistance is given to carers regarding the best way to look after the patient’s teeth, and our experience is that carers really appreciate time spent on this important aspect of dental care.
Restorative and surgical treatment- A variety of techniques can be employed to facilitate restorative dental treatment, such as fillings and extractions ranging from the use of an iPad, music or other distractions to light sedation or general anaesthesia. For people who find the local anaesthetic the most difficult part of any dental procedure, there is an alternative to the conventional dental syringe and needle. Please ask us about the ‘dental wand’ (Single Tooth Anaesthesia) or the STA system. This can often be more comfortable for special needs dentistry. Sedation may be orally administered (in consultation with your medical practitioner), and Nitrous Oxide Sedation (‘laughing gas’) is available in the surgery. Treatment under General Anaesthetic is carried out at Wyndham Clinic Private Hospital.
Dentures- General services such as repairs, adding teeth to existing dentures and relines can be carried out. A rewarding aspect of our work, particularly with our older patients, is assisting in the sometimes necessary transition from natural teeth to artificial teeth which can be an emotional journey.
Follow up- On completion of the initial treatment plan, Western Special Needs Dentistry can continue to be your regular dental provider for your future care or you may return to your referring dentist, depending on your particular circumstances.
Referrals- Western Special Needs Dentistry can organise referrals to appropriate specialists for other services such as endodontics, fixed prosthodontics (including implants), periodontics and oral surgery as required.
